Brazil and Its International Interests
March 26th, 2010 by admin
International Relations in Brazil are multi-faceted. Brazil is an emerging economy of its own and spends a lot of energy trying to be seen as a developed nation. Brazil also is very concerned with maintaining relations with other emerging economies and helping nations with less viable economies than itself. To accomplish these goals, Brazil has set a very specific set of goals for its international policies. The goals of Brazil are to increase the influence of their country in an international sphere and to have a greater weight in international negotiations, to increase and deepen unilateralism, to gain greater relations with other countries to facilitate an exchange of ideas, and to avoid any policy decisions that could hurt long term development in Brazil.
Brazil is a member of many international organizations. They are currently attempting to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. The other nations that are trying are India, Germany and Japan. Together these nations make up G4. Brazil is also a member of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, or CPLC, and the Union of South American Nations. Brazil is also the commander of the multinational United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. The International Relations in Brazil are developing with the nation.
International Relations in Brazil have heavily emphasized regional unity in South America and an alliance between Portuguese speaking countries. Although the emphasis is on unity, Brazil has several disputes with other nations. There are two sections of the border with Uruguay that Brazil disputes. These two areas are the Arroio Invernada area of the Quarai River and Brazilian Island at the intersection of the Quaraà River and the Uruguay River. Brazil also has declared a zone of interest in Antarctica that overlaps with the zones of interest of Britain and Argentina.
Recently International Relations in Brazil have taken the form of diplomatic visits to several countries. President Lula da Silva recently visited several Portuguese speaking countries in Africa to increase ties between Portuguese speaking nations. He visited Angola, São Tomé and PrÃncipe, and Mozambique. Brazil also has a lot of influence in East Timor. Therefore they have a lot of interest in obtaining peace in this nation.
