Who is responsible for the dog health care in a family with a pet is always a point of argument. It is often the children who begged and begged for the dog in the first place but once the novelty has worn off, dog health care duties suddenly seem to fall to mum and dad! This is the reason that many parents flatly refuse to allow their children a pet, but many other parents believe that dog health care can teach responsibility and maturity.

When a family gets a new dog there is a lot of upheaval involved: the house has to be prepared, the dog food bought and the dog’s bed prepared. Asking children to help with these important aspects of dog health care before bringing the dog home can give them an introduction to the responsibility of caring for an animal. Obviously, young children should always be supervised when caring for an animal, but there is no reason why a child cannot play a large role in the family dog health care.

Examples of the sorts of ways children can take responsibility for dog health care include walking the dog regularly. It is important that children learn that when another being is relying upon them they cannot put things off and the dog must be walked every day. This is an important life lesson about responsibility.
